You write a few notes about a student. Lantern turns them into a report comment in your voice, checks it against your school's rules, and opens it for you to read and edit.
Before you start
You need a voice, a class and at least one student in that class. If Write a report is missing from the sidebar, setup isn't finished yet. See Why Write and Batch are locked.
Write the report
- Open Write a report from the sidebar or the dashboard.
- Choose the Class, then the Student. If the student isn't on the list, use Add a student to add them to the class.
- Check the Report type. If your school only uses one type, it is filled in for you.
- Under Teaching notes, type your notes: one dot point per line. Select the ? beside the heading for tips on writing good notes.
- Select Write.
Writing usually takes about 40 seconds. When it's done, the report opens in the editor.
Under the class name you can see which voice the class writes in. To use a different voice for just this report, choose use another voice for this report.
Notes that work well
- Put one idea on each line. Lantern keeps or leaves out whole lines to fit your school's length limit.
- Lead with your strongest evidence: what the student did, made or said.
- Be specific. Explained fractions to the class tells Lantern more than good at maths.
- Add one next step.
- Only write what you'd stand behind in the final report.
You can also speak your notes with the microphone (Dictate your notes), or use Copy from previous report to bring in text from a report you've written before.
After the draft opens
Read the report and change anything you like by typing in it. The Before you sign off list shows anything Lantern wants you to check, such as details that aren't in your notes or a school rule the report may break. When the list is clear, finalise the report. See Sign off and finalise a report.
Your notes save as you type, so you can leave the page and come back to them.
