Lantern only writes reports once three things are in place: a voice, a class and at least one student in that class. Until then, Write a report and Batch are hidden from the sidebar, and if you open them Lantern takes you to the step you still need.
This is on purpose. Lantern writes every report in your voice, so it can't write anything until it knows how you write. It also writes each report for a student in a class, so it needs the class and the student.
What's missing?
A strip at the top of each page names your next step, with a button to go straight to it. The dashboard shows a card for each step too.
- "Your voice isn't set up yet." Make a voice from five of your past reports. See Make your voice from five past reports. No past reports? See No past reports? Write five in Lantern.
- "You don't have a class yet." Choose Set up a class. See Make a class and add students.
- "None of your classes has students yet." Choose Add your students and add at least one student.
Once all three are done, Write a report and Batch appear in the sidebar.
Also for admins
School admins and owners need their own voice, class and student to write too. Setting up the school doesn't unlock writing on its own.
What still works
- You can still open any report that already exists, from the Reports page.
- If your school's reviewer has sent reports back to you, you can open them before finishing setup.
- Reviewers can check the school's reports without a voice of their own.
A class with no voice
Even after setup, each class needs a voice. If you try to write for a class that doesn't have one, Lantern asks you to choose one of your voices for it, or make one. See Choose the voice a class writes in.
Skipped setup?
If you chose Skip setup for now, the strip at the top of the page still shows your next step. Choose it to carry on where you left off.
