Lantern writes each report for a student in one of your classes. So before you write, make a class and add its students.
Make a class
- Open Classes from the sidebar and choose + New class. If you have no classes yet, choose Create your first class.
- Give it a Class name, such as 4 Banksia or 10 English.
- Choose the Year group. Classes in Year 7 and above need a Subject too. Type to search, or type your own if it isn't listed.
- Choose the students' pronouns, if your school allows more than one. See Set student pronouns.
- Pick an icon if you like.
- Choose the voice the class writes in, then Create class.
Add students one at a time
On the class page, use the form under Students. Give the First name, and a Last name and Preferred name if you like, then the Pronouns, and select Add.
The preferred name, or the first name if there isn't one, is the name you'll see on the class list. Last names are kept for your records and are never sent to the AI.
Add the whole class from a spreadsheet
- On the class page, open the ··· menu beside Students and choose Download roster CSV.
- Fill in one row per student:
first_name,surname,preferred_nameandpronoun. - Save it as a CSV, then choose Upload roster CSV from the same menu.
Uploading a roster updates the class to match the file. Students already in the class are kept and updated. Students missing from the file move to No longer in this class; they aren't deleted, and uploading them again brings them back. A row with a pronoun Lantern doesn't recognise shows as an error so you can fix the file.
Change or tidy up a class
From Class actions on the class page you can Edit class, Archive class (it moves to Show archived but isn't deleted) or Delete class. Reports already written for a deleted class stay in your reports.
To remove one student, choose Remove beside them.
Once the class has a voice and at least one student, you can write its reports. See Write a report from your notes.
