Lantern writes each report with the student's pronouns, and checks every report for them. A word that isn't one of the student's pronouns must be fixed before the report can be signed off. So each student needs pronouns set before Lantern writes for them.
You set pronouns on the class page, not when you write.
Which pronouns you can use
Your school chooses which pronouns its students may use: one or more of she/her, he/him and they/them. You can only pick from those.
- If your school allows just one, such as a girls' school using she/her, every student uses it. There's nothing to set.
- If your school allows more than one, set them for the class or for each student.
Set pronouns for a whole class
When you make or edit a class, choose Students' pronouns:
- Pick one, such as he/him, and every student without pronouns of their own uses it.
- Pick Set per student if students in the class use different pronouns. Then each student needs their own.
Set one student's pronouns
- Open Classes and choose the class.
- In the list of students, choose the Pronouns for that student.
It saves straight away. A student's own pronouns always win over the class's.
When you add students from a roster CSV, fill in the pronoun column. Lantern understands common ways of writing them, such as she, He/Him or female. Anything it doesn't recognise shows as an error so you can fix it.
"Needs pronouns"
A student marked Needs pronouns has none set and their class doesn't give one. Lantern won't write their report until you set them. On the Write page you'll see a link to open the class. In Batch, the student is marked too.
Changing your school's choices
Only a school admin can change which pronouns the school allows, in School admin under Student pronouns. See School settings.
