How your school's rules are checked

What the rules check looks at, where to see your school's rules, the difference between must-fix rules, suggestions and teacher checks, and the check's limits.

Every report Lantern writes or checks is checked against your school's rules for reports. This article explains what's checked, where to read the rules and what the check can't do.

What's checked

When a draft is written, and again as you edit, Lantern checks the report for:

  • School rules: your school's rules for spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitals, phrasing, structure and content. Each report is checked against the rules for its report type, year group and subject.
  • Your notes: details in the report that aren't in your notes. See "Not in your notes": details Lantern flags.
  • Pronouns: words that aren't the student's pronouns.
  • Length: whether the report fits your school's limit.

You'll see each of these in the summary at the top of Before you sign off.

When you change the words yourself, Lantern checks the changed sentences about 5 seconds after you stop typing. There's no button to press.

Where to see your school's rules

Open Guidelines from the sidebar. It lists your school's rules for reports, grouped by category, with an example of what not to write and what to write instead. Use Search rules… to find one. Your school admin sets the rules; teachers can read them but not change them.

In the editor, highlight some words and choose What's the rule? to see whether a rule covers them.

Three kinds of rule

  • Must fix: a firm rule. A report that breaks it can't be signed off until it's fixed. You can't dismiss it.
  • Suggestion: your school suggests a change. Use the suggested wording, or keep yours to dismiss it.
  • Teacher check: a rule your school leaves to your judgement, such as whether a word is a name at your school. You decide, and can mark it off.

See Deal with rule findings and suggestions for how to answer each one.

Lantern fixes what it can first

Before you see a new draft, Lantern fixes the rule breaks it can, with small edits inside the sentences concerned. It never fixes details that aren't in your notes or teacher checks for you. Those come to you.

The check's limits

The rules check uses AI together with fixed patterns for some rules. It's good, but not perfect: now and then it can miss a break or flag something that's fine. You're the final check. If a rule seems to be flagged wrongly again and again, tell your school admin, and contact us.
