School admins set the rules every report is checked against. Teachers see them, read only, on the Guidelines page.
Open School admin from the sidebar and choose the Compliance rules tab.
Add a rule
- Select Add rule.
- Give it a Name teachers will understand, and choose a Category.
- Choose the Severity:
errorrules show teachers as Must fix, warningrules as Suggestion. - Choose the Handling: Firm rules must be fixed before sign-off; Teacher check rules are left to the teacher's judgement.
- Choose the kind of rule:
- Prohibited phrase: words that must never appear. List them under Prohibited phrases (one per line).
- Substitution: a wording to replace with another, which Lantern can swap in for the teacher.
- Capitalisation: terms that must keep exact capitals.
- Required terminology: the term your school uses in place of another, such as Home Learning, not homework.
- Judgement: rules with no fixed pattern. Lantern reads the name, examples and edge cases to decide what to flag.
- Custom (regex): a pattern, for advanced use.
- Add an Error example, a Correct example and any Edge cases. These show on the Guidelines page and help the check get it right.
- Under Scope, choose which report types, year groups or courses the rule applies to. Leave them open for the whole school.
- Select Save rule.
To change a rule, choose Edit beside it. To stop using a rule without deleting it, switch it Off.
Built-in rules
Lantern comes with some built-in rules. They're read only, but you can switch any of them off for your school.
Teacher checks
The Teacher checks view shows how often teachers mark each teacher check off, and their reasons. If a rule is marked off a lot, its wording may need work. You can Make firm a rule, Keep as teacher checks, or choose Work with Lantern to tighten it.
See what changed
The Activity log tab lists every change to your school's rules, with who made it. Use it to see why a report passed the rules check in one semester but not another. It covers rule changes only, not every admin action.
