Deal with rule findings and suggestions

Use "Yes, fix it", keep your wording, dismiss a suggestion or mark off a teacher check so the report can be signed off.

When Lantern finds something in a report, it shows it in the Before you sign off list beside the report. Work through the list one item at a time. Each item asks one question; choose Why? to see the reason.

The list has two parts:

  • Must do: these stop sign-off until you deal with them.
  • Worth a look: optional. They never stop sign-off.

A school rule is broken

The item says "Breaks a school rule" and names the rule.

  • If Lantern has a fix, select the button that shows the new wording to use it.
  • Or choose Edit myself and change the words in the report.

Firm rules can't be dismissed: the report can't be signed off until the words follow the rule.

Your school suggests a change

The item says "Your school suggests a change".

  • Use the suggested wording, or
  • choose Keep as is to keep your wording. The suggestion is dismissed.

A teacher check

Some rules are left to your judgement. Lantern asks a question, such as "Is this a name at your school?" or "Does your school want this changed?".

  • Yes, fix it puts the cursor on the words with them selected, so you can type the fix.
  • Yes, change it or Yes, capitalise it makes the change for you.
  • No, keep it marks the check off and keeps your words. You can pick a reason, such as Not a name at our school or It's already right. Reasons are optional and help your school improve its rules.

When you change the words

Changing words never ticks an item straight away. Lantern checks the changed sentences about 5 seconds after you stop typing. The item ticks off as Fixed if the check passes, or opens again if the rule is still broken.

One-click answers, such as No, keep it, tick at once.

Change your mind

Undo sits beside your most recent answer. It puts the text back as it was.

When nothing is left under Must do, select Finalise report. See Sign off and finalise a report.

  • How your school's rules are checked

What the rules check looks at, where to see your school's rules, the difference between must-fix rules, suggestions and teacher checks, and the check's limits.

  • Sign off and finalise a report

What the sign-off declaration means, what stops a report being signed off, and why saving a change to a finalised report reopens it.

  • "Not in your notes": details Lantern flags

Why a draft can include details your notes never gave, what "not in your notes" and "a little beyond" mean, how to confirm or change each one, and why a "not in your notes" flag blocks sign-off until you do.
