"Not in your notes": details Lantern flags

Why a draft can include details your notes never gave, what "not in your notes" and "a little beyond" mean, how to confirm or change each one, and why a "not in your notes" flag blocks sign-off until you do.

To sound like you, Lantern sometimes adds a detail your notes didn't give. It can't match a teacher's voice without doing this. So every draft is checked against your notes, and anything your notes don't support is flagged for you to confirm or change. This is on purpose: you decide what's true, and nothing unconfirmed can be signed off.

The two kinds of flag

Flagged words are marked in the report and listed under Before you sign off.

  • "This isn't in your notes. Is it true?" The detail isn't in your notes at all. It's under Must do, so it stops sign-off until you answer it.
  • "This goes a little beyond your notes." The detail stretches something you did write. It's under Worth a look, which is optional and never stops sign-off.

Answer each one

For a detail that isn't in your notes:

  • Yes, it's true keeps the words. Use it when the detail is right, even though you didn't write it down.
  • No, change it shows Suggested wording that fits your notes, when Lantern has one. Choose Use suggestion, or Edit myself to type your own fix.

For a detail that goes a little beyond your notes, choose Fine as is or Change it.

When you type a change yourself, Lantern checks the new words about 5 seconds after you stop typing. The item ticks off once that check passes.

Words you type aren't flagged

Text you type into the report yourself is treated as yours. Lantern never flags your own words as possibly untrue.

Fewer flags next time

The best fix is better notes. If a detail is true, add it to your notes with Edit notes, so Lantern has it next time. Don't add new facts through Refine: they aren't in your notes, so they get flagged. See Change a draft with Refine.

The notes check must run

Lantern has to finish checking the report against your notes before you can sign it off. If it couldn't, Before you sign off shows Check for details not in your notes. Select Check now to run it.
