Lantern uses AI to draft reports in your voice and to check them against your school's rules. Here's which AI services it uses, what they see and how your data is protected.
Which AI Lantern uses
Drafting, refining and the rules check use Google Vertex AI. Lantern calls Google directly, with no other company in between.
Vertex AI processes the limited data each request needs, such as your notes and the draft text, outside Australia. Everything Lantern stores, including your reports, stays in Australia. See Where your data is stored and how it's protected.
Dictation uses Google Cloud Speech-to-Text. Live dictation is turned into text in Sydney, and Google keeps no audio or text. A school admin can turn dictation off for the whole school.
Not used to train AI models
Student information isn't used to train third-party AI models. Your notes, report drafts and the requests Lantern sends to the AI aren't used for model training, and stay subject to contractual controls and deletion rights. This is in our agreements with our service providers, so it can't quietly change. It isn't a setting someone could switch on.
How Lantern learns your voice
Your voice is learned from five of your own reports, and it's only used inside your school's Lantern, to draft your comments. It isn't shared with other teachers or other schools.
You stay the author
AI drafts and checks, but it never publishes anything. You read, change and sign off every report, and details the AI added that aren't in your notes are flagged for you to confirm. Every draft is marked as AI-assisted, and the audit trail records where AI was involved and who signed off the final wording.
Schools that don't want AI drafting
A school can use Lantern as a compliance checker only: teachers paste in comments they wrote themselves and Lantern checks them against the school's rules, without drafting. See Check comments written somewhere else.
