Lantern keeps your school's student names and report comments in Australia, encrypted, limited to your school and recorded in an audit trail.
Where it's stored
All student and report data lives with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Sydney. If Sydney becomes unavailable, Lantern fails over to AWS Melbourne. Backups are kept in Australia too.
Some things are processed outside Australia:
- AI drafting and checking use Google Vertex AI, which processes the limited data each request needs, such as your notes and the draft text, outside Australia. See AI providers and model training.
- Recordings uploaded for transcription are processed in the United States. Live dictation is transcribed in Sydney.
- Some supporting services, such as sign-on, billing and certain support functions, may process information overseas. Where they do, we take reasonable steps to make sure it's handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
How it's protected
- Encrypted: everything is encrypted in transit and at rest, including the database, backups and stored files.
- Scoped to your school: every request is limited to the signed-in person's school. Teachers see their own classes and reports. Reviewers and admins can read their own school's reports.
- Ember staff: outside your school, only Ember staff who need to can see reports. Their access is role-based and needs multi-factor sign-in.
- Audit trail: an append-only log records who viewed, drafted, edited, approved and exported what, and when. It can't be changed after the fact. Reviewers' reads of other teachers' reports are logged too.
No student or parent accounts
Students and parents never sign in to Lantern and have no profiles. Students exist only as names on their teacher's class list. Their last names are kept for the teacher's records and are never sent to the AI.
What Lantern collects
Only what a teacher needs to write a comment: the student's name and pronouns, the teacher's notes and the report text. Lantern handles this on behalf of your school.
