Sign-in problems and forgotten passwords

What the sign-in error messages mean (school not set up, too many attempts, IT approval for Microsoft) and how to get a forgotten password reset.

If Lantern won't let you in, the message on the sign-in page usually says why. Here's what the common ones mean and what to do.

"Your school isn't set up with Lantern yet"

Your email address isn't on a domain registered to a school in Lantern. Check you're using your school email, not a personal one. If you are, your school needs to contact Ember Education to get access, or to add another email domain. See Your school's email domains.

"Too many sign-in attempts from your network"

Lantern has had a lot of sign-in attempts from your network, which can happen when many people at a school sign in at once. Wait a few minutes and try again. Your password hasn't been rejected.

"Invalid email or password"

Check your email address and password, and that Caps Lock is off. After five wrong passwords in a row, Lantern stops accepting the password for 15 minutes, even the right one. If you've tried several times, wait 15 minutes before trying again.

Microsoft: "Your school's IT admin needs to approve Lantern"

Your school's Microsoft settings need an IT admin to approve Lantern once before anyone can sign in with Microsoft. Ask your IT team to approve it. In the meantime, sign in with your email and password if you have one.

"Personal Google accounts can't be used with Lantern"

Or the same message for Microsoft. You signed in with a personal account. Sign out of it in your browser, then sign in with your school account.

"This Google account isn't managed by your school"

The Google account isn't your school's. Use your school Google account. For Microsoft, the similar message means the account isn't from your school's Microsoft organisation.

"That sign-in link has expired"

The sign-in took too long or was started in another browser. Go back to the sign-in page and try again.

Forgotten your password?

There's no self-service password reset. Password accounts are set up by Ember, so email support@lanternreports.com.au and we'll help you reset it. If your school uses Google or Microsoft, you can sign in that way instead without a password.

Still can't get in?

Try a private browser window, or another browser, to rule out an old sign-in stuck in your browser. If that doesn't help, contact us with the exact message you see.

Still stuck?

Email support@lanternreports.com.au and a real person will get back to you.

  • Ways to sign in

Sign in with your school Google or Microsoft account or an email and password; personal accounts can't be used; connect another sign-in method from your Account page.

  • Your school's email domains

Only staff with an email on a domain registered to your school can sign in; Ember adds domains, so the Domains page is read only.

  • When something won't load or seems stuck

First steps when a page won't load, a draft seems stuck or Lantern is slow, and when to contact support.
