Using Lantern on your phone

What the phone version offers (Today, Library, Review, Me and capture), what stays on a computer, such as Batch, and why a tablet or iPad can open in the phone layout.

Lantern works on your phone in the browser. When you open it on a phone, you get a phone version built for quick jobs: capturing notes after a lesson, reviewing drafts and finishing reports on the go. There's nothing to download from an app store.

What's on the phone

Four tabs sit along the bottom of the screen:

  • Today: your reports in progress and those needing attention. Choose Capture a note to start a report.
  • Library: your reports, like the Reports page on a computer.
  • Review: the raised button in the middle. Swipe through reports that need your attention and decide on each. Each decision saves as you make it.
  • Me: your Classes, Writing profile, Guidelines, Account and Settings, plus School admin for admins, and Sign out.

Capture lets you pick a class and student, then speak or type your notes and select Generate. You can also switch to Check to check a finished comment. Reports open in a full-screen editor where you can read, fix and sign off.

What stays on a computer

Batch isn't offered on the phone; draft a whole class on a computer. Some admin and setup pages, such as members and a class's first voice, open as their full computer page inside the phone version. They work, but they're easier on a bigger screen.

Add Lantern to your home screen

For quicker access, add Lantern to your home screen. On iPhone, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, Lantern may offer Install. It then opens full-screen, like an app.

Why a tablet or iPad can open in the phone layout

Lantern picks the layout from the screen, not the device. You get the phone layout when:

  • the screen is narrow and touch-based, such as a small iPad held upright, or
  • you open Lantern from a home-screen icon. This always uses the phone layout, even on an iPad.

To get the full computer layout on a tablet, turn it sideways, or open Lantern in the browser rather than from the home-screen icon.

Phone-only screens, such as Review and Me, take you to the nearest computer page if you open them on a computer.

Still stuck?

Email support@lanternreports.com.au and a real person will get back to you.

  • When something won't load or seems stuck

First steps when a page won't load, a draft seems stuck or Lantern is slow, and when to contact support.

  • Dictate your notes

Use the microphone to speak your notes instead of typing them; a school admin can switch dictation off for the whole school.

  • Draft a whole class with Batch

Fill in notes for every student, or upload a notes CSV, and draft the whole class in one go; each report still needs your review and sign-off.
